Old Girls Luncheon at the Burlington Hotel on 14th November 2013
I apologise for the lateness of the report. No excuses…just apologies! 69 ladies sat down to our November lunch. They came from as far afield as London, Harwich,Kent,Leicester,Felixstowe, Harleston, Beccles and Salhouse. The food was tasty as always and Jane thanked the Burlington for yet another good spread! Sadly Jane had to report that two of our member had died since the last lunch; Joan Baker and Joan Chowles. Jane also welcomed four new members; Pamela Bye nee Harrington, Marilyn Ribbands nee Jones, Ilene Hadden and Linda Traill nee Fellas. Our speaker was John Balls, who taught at the school from 1960-1965. His subject was “Norfolk Survivors on the Titanic”. A fascinating insight regarding those who were from Norfolk and were unlucky enough to be on the Titanic on 15th April 1912, when she took 1,517 women, men and children to the bottom of the ocean. John knew his subject extremely well and had researched these Norfolk people for a very long time, meeting up with relatives to get to know even more about them. It was obviously a subject very close to his heart and accompanied by some very interesting photographs. He has written a book Titanic: The Norfolk Survivors An interesting link here: http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/picture_gallery_relatives_of_norwich_survivors_of_titanic_gather_for_special_anniversary_event_1_1349180 Freda Clark nee Bootman had sent her good wishes to all the ladies at the lunch. She was hoping that perhaps someone remembered her and would contact her fredaclark38@gmail.com She was at the school from 1949-1956 and has lived in Vancouver, Canada since 1975. She has been retired for 10 years now after a career as a teacher. Carla Nottage nee Middleton also sent her good wishes. She was at the school from 1957-1961. She moved to Australia in 1968 and now lives in Queensland. She would love to catch up with former friends. donandcarla@hotmail.com. The next luncheon will take place on 24th April 2014, The Burlington Hotel, Great Yarmouth. A Happy Christmas to everyone….just think….next time we meet it will be SPRING! Maureen, Carole, Iris, Judith and Anne Mr. Newton, Diana Perkins and Pamela Mobbs Jean Morris, Hilary Smith and Diana Perkins Sandra Smith, Carolyn George and Jill Ward Peggy Newman, Maureen Holt and Jill Thain The Reunion Cake
Calling all Guides from the 5th Great Yarmouth.
Carole Dane Owen and Jennifer Bailey Harrison are planning to have a guides' reunion next spring/summer - one with a proper wood camp fire, (none of these modern gas fire gadgets) sausages, beans, tracking, a sing-song. Folding chairs will be acceptable for those who would find sitting on a ground sheet less easy than before. Anyone who was in the Guides or can tell other guides, please do so and get in touch. If anyone remembers Carla Middleton at school she would love to contact old friends from her school days. She emigrated to Australia in 1968.
If you remember Carla and would like to get in touch please leave me a message via the web page and I will forward her email address. If you prefer you can leave a message on our Facebook page as she will be watching! Thank you Pauline 61 ladies attended the lunch and all seemed to enjoy themselves if the noise of the chatter was anything to go by! Judy Narburgh managed to get a table of 12 ladies together which must be some sort of a record? Well done Judy. We discovered that there is car parking for us at any future lunch but you have to remember the number 4411 to punch in. The car park is on the corner of Sandown Road. We won’t need it in November as parking is free but some ladies have had to pay £3 to park in April….free is best! There was great interest in the memorabilia table and much more information was forthcoming so that the photographs we do have that were lacking names ....are now complete. Jill Fearnley (nee Stolworthy) brought some really nice photographs for us AND knew all the names. I will be putting them on the website and also making copies of them for our Archive. Much to my personal delight she had a hockey team photo with me on it and then told me that I had played in the same team as Pat Donaldson…. England Hockey Player! I couldn’t wait to tell my sportsman husband! Shirley Palmer discovered that we had copies of her birthday parties in 1942,43 and 45. Sadly I couldn’t tell her where they came from. Perhaps someone out there knows? More ladies have promised photographs which is very encouraging. Patricia Yarham lives in Australia and would like to “Skype” us at the next luncheon. I will bring my laptop and see if we can manage that. She will have to get up in the middle of the night! There was talk of a Speaker for the next meeting but that is under discussion at the moment….watch this space! A very pleasant lunch was had by all. |
